Target Audience – Podcast

As a group we had a meeting to decide upon the target audience for our music video. As we have decided upon the song ‘Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked’ by Cage The Elephant, we decided to look further into their style of music and through this research (as shown in previous posts) we have decided upon our target audience.

We recorded the meeting discussing the decision of our target audience in the form of a podcast:

As a group we concluded that our target audience for this music view would be young adults between the ages of 16-24. This 8 year age range allows us to target people close to our own age, which will be reflected in our future costume choices and casting decisions. The gender for our target audience however is not specific, although we aim to target mainly male audience members due to the actions of the protagonist which are depicted within the lyrics.

Additionally this extended target audience to the age of 24 gives us a wider scope for creative ideas, as an older audience allows us to play towards the more mature themes within the lyrics of our chosen song. Such as the introduction of a ‘Pretty Little Thing’ (as the lyrics hint that this character is a Harlot) and a Mugger (with the possession of a gun as described in the lyrics, showing his aggressive nature.)

One important point made within this above podcast is the use of the song ‘Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked’ by Cage The Elephant in the videogame ‘Borderlands’ which has an 18 rating, which initially set a minimum age for our target audience, however we decided to lower the age to 16 to allow us to target as wide of an audience as possible. It is also important to mention this is the minimum age we are targeting as otherwise the content and characters included may be seen as inappropriate to younger viewers.

To conclude our chosen target audience for our music video is young adults between the ages of 16-24. Mainly males, however this is not entirely essential to the creative choices, other than possibly the casting choices which we shall make in the future when we are closer to filming.
